The Value of Landscapes

Landscapes are the basis for the nature around us. We need these habitats, we use them, they provide us with many services. But in addition to economic, financial and ecological values, landscapes also have a cultural, aesthetic and emotional dimension.

Even though our world is changing more than ever and climate change must worry us, the series focuses on a halfway intact world that should awaken positive emotions in us. Landscape is constituted by physical and spatial aspects, but it is also the basis for processes of perception and identification. As such, positive images can evoke an almost childlike enthusiasm in the discovery of beauty. So the focus of this series is not on the sad image of big cities or destroyed habitats. Rather, the beauty and calming of lovely, supposedly intact landscapes is celebrated. The aesthetic should evoke emotions that contrast with the deterioration of the actual resources around us.

It is not about criticising the destruction, the lack of respect for nature, the factors that influence the aesthetic value of habitats and landscapes. It is about showing what we are losing.

Pia Parolin is a biologist, photographer and book author. She is committed to the conservation of nature through the synergy of science and art. She holds a PhD in ecology and was convened to the German Society for Photography DGPh. She uses photography to explore the connection between people and nature: how do we use landscapes, how are our living conditions changing due to climate change, how closely do we feel connected to nature? Without pointing the finger, but focusing on the positive, she emphasizes aesthetics and emotions to show how valuable and important nature is.
